You can buy stuff online and pay bills the same way all quickly and conveniently.
To open an online savings account you may be able to apply online, printing out the application form and taking it to your nearest branch. Some banks allow you to set up your account over the telephone, so that you don’t have to set foot in the bank building. In some cases you can do it by both telephone and mail, if you have to prove your identity. You do need your own computer to use for an online account. Using public computers leaves you open to fraud if you don’t sign off properly.
